Home on a friday night POSTED AT 09:44 AM My parents didnt allow me to go out today because they think ive been going out too much these past few weeks. I can't argue with that because it's definitely true. They want me to concentrate on studying instead of concentrating with my friends and with gimmicks. I don't understand it because ive been burning my eyes out studying all week long. I just want a little time out with my friends so i wont feel too much stress than i already am feeling. Aside from that, I really miss my friends already. It's hard not being able to see them like I used to before. I just wish my parents see the efforts I'm doing with my studies. If ever I go out, it doesn't mean im not going to be able to concentrate on my studies already. Everyone needs a time out sometimes. Going out once a week every weekend is enough for me to just be with my friends and enjoy before the busy week starts again. hai.. I know I can have fun and enjoy with myself alone but its really different being with my friends and being able to catch up with them. Bottom line is, I MISS MY FRIENDS AND I WANT A TIME OUT. Feeling: sick *solo flight*

QUESTIONS POSTED AT 03:10 PM “What kind of world do you want to live in?” This was a question raised in the beginning of the movie “Plato’s Republic”. My answer to this question would be simple. The kind of world that I would want to live in is that of which Peace, Justice and over-all Goodness reign. In our society today, injustice, corruption and violence not only from the government officials but also from the citizens are occurring. The Republic by Plato talks about Justice and Goodness all in all with respect to governance of a city or a state which I think is the answer with the problems that our society is dealing with. It tackles issues regarding Justice, Government forms and The Theory of Universals that can open up the minds of any person reading it.
What is Justice? It is for me achieving equality among all people and the absence of discrimination and individual desires (i.e. wealth, fame, power, etc.). To be able to reach the state of total justice, we must first start with ourselves in order to be and give just to others. Socrates said that justice does not exist with the human soul but is an outcome of a well-ordered soul through the cardinal virtues of Temperance, Courage and Wisdom. He also said that a society will be just if a ruler can create laws, the warriors can carry out the rules and the producers can abbey this authority. This means that we are not born with justice streaming through our veins but rather justice is achieved by a person’s willingness to cooperate and do his own responsibilities in life without having to step on others’ way. Also, justice is attainable by being brave and at the same time being wise and being able to control one’s self from doing acts that can or will harm others. Glaucon said that if people had the power to do injustice without having to suffer its consequence or punishment, they would do it. He used the legend of Gyges who found an invisibility ring and used it to murder a king and take over the kingdom. Plato answered this by implying that it is good to be good even with a ring of invisibility. He also said that it is best to be just rather than unjust for an individual and uses a philosopher as an example. A philosopher is the only one that witnesses the Form of the Good or the truth behind all things thus, making philosophical pleasure the only true pleasure since other pleasures experienced by others are simply an unbiased state free of pain. This means that only a just person can experience true freedom and possibly see the truth surrounding him. Also, even if no one is looking or no one else can notice what we are doing, we should have it in our hearts to be good because in the end, it is us who will be captives of the guilt in our conscience and it will be us in the end who will live an unhappy life. What is a government? It is for me the one who has the authority to govern a certain state or country. Our government in the Philippines now is trying its best to boost our economic status and to abolish poverty but at the same time, we all know that corruption is still and forever will be present in one way or another in this government. When we say politics nowadays, one can always associate it with power and corruption. Socrates said that corruption is caused by power which I agree in because without the power or authority to access funds or manipulate people, dishonesty and fraud will not happen. There are several types of government which are Oligarchy, Democracy, Tyranny and Timocracy and all of these lead to corruption.. Socrates believed in having a philosopher as ruler because he/she is the most just or unbiased person who has the least tendency to take advantage of power that may result to corruption. Philosophers according to him rule for the good of the city-state and not for their own intentions or personal desires. I disagree about his notion of philosophers as kings because thought they are just and they rule not for themselves, they are still subject to committing corruption because we can really never tell who has pure intentions to govern than those who don’t. He also shares about “The allegory of the good government” where rulers assembles couples for merely reproducing, population is stable and the youth can only be educated with works and authors that are good and that will help them better themselves. To Plato, the forms of government are arranged according the worst. First is Timocracy, second is Oligarchy which is ruled by rich people, third is Democracy which has a tendency to be ruled by unfit officials and lastly, the worst of all is Tyranny which has a ruler who creates laws to his desires and no one can object to him. As I have said earlier, when politics is mentioned, corruption and obsession with power always go with it. In every form of government, imperfection lies and the allegory of the good government of Socrates is really quite impossible these days. What is universal? It is something that is applicable everywhere and something that is used or understood by all according to the Random House Webster’s dictionary. This means that the Theory of Universals found in Plato’s Republic is applicable to just about everyone or everything. To understand it clearly, Plato used the famous “Allegory of the cave” as an example. This is about a group of people chained and who have lived inside a cave all their lives. Their chains do not permit them to look back so all they can see are shadows caused by a flame behind them. Then, a prisoner of a cave becomes free and realizes that the shadows they are seeing are not real and so he goes outside of the cave to see the statues that are causing the shadows. As he goes out of the cave, he’s blinded by the light and eventually adjusted to it. He then realizes that the shadows were reflected by the Sun and that the shadows he saw in the cave were just imitations of the real objects in the outside world. The prisoners inside the cave represent us now because we are now prisoners of our culture. We have learned to follow the norms and traditions because we are used to following and doing these. By becoming captives of our culture, we now are hindering ourselves from seeing the truth and reality present outside the culture that we are used to living. We are blinded from the truth because we choose to do so. Like the freedman who became enlightened and who was able to know about the reality outside the cave, we should not be fools of what we think is true or real. We can do this by choosing to know more and become open to the possibilities that may shake our faith and our cultures that we have gotten used to. In trying to find truth, we first encounter belief, then understanding then be dialectic where we start to understand about more forms of reality. What I’ve learned in Plato’s Republic is that one should never give up in searching for truth because this is what Plato exactly did. The Republic talk about the reality of life and how we should take it seriously as matured individuals to be able to know what is real and what is true. In searching for the truth, it is always good because we come close to satisfying our own curiosities in life. If we do not search for the truth, in a way we become prisoners because we let ourselves be deceived of what we see, hear, feel, smell and even taste. It is not enough to know about things, what we need is the understanding of why and how these things occur or happen in order to help others who are still in need of enlightenment. MAKING MAJOR ADJUSTMENTS POSTED AT 07:27 AM School has been pretty.... well, steady. Im stiil in shock with the things ive been seeing in and out of the school. Inside the school: 1. BOYS- haha. coming from an all girls school, im not used to having male classmates. Honestly, I don't have many boy friends, maybe just around 3? By saying "boy friends" i mean boys who are my friends. By saying "friends" i mean those who i really can trust and rely on and those who i'm really close with. 2. THE CURRICULUM- I never expected UST to be so hard. I quite expected that it would be challenging just like any other incoming freshmen but it's CRAZY, homeworks here and there not mentioning the thick photocopied papers we have to read in all subjects. It probably would have been easier if we had a nice schedule but MWF:11-3 and TTH:1-7 is quite not ample for me to study because of the travelling hours to and from the school. I haven't gotten the chance to go out and just unwind for quite some time now. REALLY BUSY AND HECTIC. I need to work double or triple hard as I did in high school. My target grade? UNO BABY. haha. Outside the school: 1. THE TRANSPORTATION- having to commute everyday or at leat 3 times a week is a new experience for me. It's like when I go and ride the jeepney, fx and mrt im taking risk for myself. Why say risk? because one can never tell what may happen for that certain day or any day for that matter. If id be able to have the chance to have a supernatural power, I think being able to predict what may happen in the future would be my best bet. Life would be a bore knowing what will happen in the future, but at least I get to prepare myself to avoid the things that I dont want to happen. 2. SEEING LESS FORTUNATE PEOPLE ON THE STREETS- this is not my first time to see them but this is the first time where my eyes really opened to reality. Who knows? anyone could end up being like that. It's just that whenever I go home and I see them everyday lying on the streets or begging for money, thoughts come into my mind. Thoughts like How do they survive doing that? Why are they living in poor conditions? Where is the help that they need? When will they be able to recover from their present situation? It is heartbreaking seeing them depending on others for survival and knowing that I can never really do much but give them food or a little amount of money. TALK ABOUT MAJOR ADJUSTMENTS. Hopefully I can adjust as soon as possible. I need it. Listening to: STOLEN Feeling: stressed |
